That's the best food to use, but other regular foods also give you % chances for them to grow into a greater version too. An easy example: Feral flesh has a good chance of making a greater hyena, BTW. Greater Hyena’s have a 20% likelihood to be trained from feeding a Hyena Cub 1 Feral Flesh, which is super easy to get.
